School Nurses
All School Nurses are qualified nurses and many have additional training in specialist subjects. They are responsible for a number of schools within the area they are based, and their role has changed significantly over the past 10-15 years. No longer does the image of the “nit nurse” or doctor’s hand maiden exist! School Nurses are now developing advanced skills and adapting their services to better meet the needs of children, young people and their families, helping children and young people to make healthy choices and address the wider influences that can undermine these choices.
School Nurses provide different services depending on the needs of the local area and may include:
- Enuresis clinics.
- Drop-in sessions in school so children and young people can receive confidential advice and support.
- Supporting activities for promoting health
- Training for school staff on health issues such as anaphylaxis, diabetes and epilepsy.
- Organise immunisations and give advice on outbreaks of diseases.
- Offer support and advice for young people to give up smoking.
- Offer contraceptive and pregnancy testing advice and services.
- Work with staff, young people and governors to develop health policies in school.
- Provide support and advice to parents and carers on parenting skills.
- Provide babysitting skills training for young people.
